The iconic Fremantle Markets need to be properly maintained and should be air-conditioned and solar powered
The issue of the Fremantle markets lease has been an ongoing problem. The current lease has been in place since 2008 and won’t expire until October 2026. The lease was not put out to public tender. Many traders have been evicted over the years and there have been long running tensions around the state of the markets and the rents charged.
Lack of air-conditioning is a huge problem, given that many stall holders sell fresh food, including cheeses and in Summer temperatures inside can hit 45C. These markets should be solar powered to reduce the City’s emissions and reduce the stall holders power bills.
